Berry Creamy Cupcakes

September 24th, 2007

It’s rare when I bake something that has no chocolate in it, since I can’t imagine life without it, but I needed to branch out and try something new. I found this recipe for Raspberry Cream Cupcakes courtesy of Giada De Laurentiis from the Food Network. It was a big hit and so delicious! It’s a great light and airy cupcake, and it is definitely a different twist to your everyday cupcakes. The recipe calls for raspberries, but I also decided to make ones with strawberries instead (I noticed that a lot of my friends weren’t too fond of raspberries). I have to say that I like the strawberry version more, because it reminded me of a strawberry shortcake in a cupcake version. And the unique thing about this cupcake is that you cut the cupcake tops off and spoon the filling on top of the bottom to make it into a cupcake sandwich!

Red Wine and Chocolate Cupcakes

August 20th, 2007

I made red wine cupcakes this past weekend. My friend found the recipe and thought it was interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. It was the first time I’ve ever baked with wine and it was a pretty interesting experience. The cupcakes were made with red wine and the frosting had red wine in it too as well as balsamic vinegar! They turned out lovely, but I wasn’t quite fond of the taste. Maybe its because I’m not a red wine fan…but despite that they everyone else said they were good. If you do decide to make these cupcakes be forewarned that they are pretty rich so make sure you have some milk in the fridge before you eat them.

Charm City Cakes

July 19th, 2007

One of my favorite shows on the Food Network is Ace of Cakes. I love this show mainly because you get to see the inner workings of the Charm City Cakes bakery and see the crazy fun people who work and create these fantastic cakes. I was browsing the Charm City Cakes site, and found a few cakes that I really liked. My only wish is that one day I can be as artistic and creative enough to make my own awesome cakes.

I love how they were so detailed with the newspaper and the mallets!

Cioccolata

June 19th, 2007

My aunt just came back from Rome and brought me some Italian milk chocolate as a souvenir. I normally don’t like milk chocolate (I’m a dark chocolate fan myself), but much to my surprise this was probably some of the best tasting milk chocolate I’ve ever had. I had to check the box description twice because these milk chocolates tasted far from milk…they had more of a semi sweet taste which I loved and it was so smooth and creamy. The next best thing was the little match boxes where the chocolates were tucked neatly inside and each box showcased a beautiful picture of Rome’s famous historical sites.

Red Velvet

June 19th, 2007

I made cupcakes this weekend…my very first attempt at making red velvet cupcakes. The end result was a surprisingly great. They were moist, had the right amount of sweetness, and the cream cheese frosting paired well with it. I got rave reviews from my friends and especially my boyfriend who said that I could make a million dollars baking them. Haha, we’ll see…

Pinkberry vs. Yogurtland

May 21st, 2007

Yes, I too have followed the masses in this yogurt craze…first it started with golden spoon, then yogurtland and pinkberry. I never thought that plain tart frozen yogurt could taste so good, and then add some fruit toppings and its heaven. A brand new Yogurtland just opened in my area and I went to check it out this weekend. I was really impress…it was a total copycat version of pinkberry down to their modern interior design, but the big difference was the selection of 16 frozen yogurt flavors and its self-serve. I went inside and I was really excited, actually a little too excited…variety has its good and bad points for me (that being the amount of time it takes to finally come up with a decision, but then again I’m picky so having only a couple choices isn’t good either). So here’s my take on Pinkberry vs. Yogurtland:

Yogurtland
Pros: 16 flavors, large variety of toppings, and cheaper
Cons: Machines breakdown frequently, poor quality control

Pinkberry
Pros: plain tart yogurt taste better, granola topping is better, good quality control
Cons: 2 flavors, no orange county locations

V for Viennetta

December 5th, 2006

A couple weeks ago, I was walking through the frozen food aisle at the market and it just dawned on me that I haven’t eaten Viennetta for years. For those of you who have never heard of Vienetta, its a unique frozen dessert comprised of multiple layers of vanilla ice cream with ribbons of chocolate layers in between forming an “ice cream cake”, but without the cake. Anyway, I found a link that shows a mesmerizing video on the production of this delectable treat.

Nothing Could Be Sweeter than Cupcakes & Crepes!

November 19th, 2006

I know I’ve been MIA for awhile, but I’m back and I come barring cupcakes and crepes! So, to fill in what I’ve been up to for the month in a half that I’ve been gone:
1) Classes started
2) I burnt my hand with hot scalding water giving me my first second degree burn…yay for me!
3) I’ve just been too busy juggling everything that unfortunately my blog suffers for it
Luckily, I’ve still been able to experiment with culinary confections. For Halloween, I made my famously delicious chocolate cupcakes with vanilla bean frosting and recently I’ve been obsessed with making crepes with different types of fillings. I made some savory crepes with chicken, mushroom, and spinach in a creme sauce and sweet crepes with nutella, bananas, and of course whip cream. One day I hope to own my very own professional crepe maker, then making crepes can be easier and faster to make!
